Four rooms

Come in. It takes a while.

Nobody chooses a bridal set in ten minutes, and nobody comes alone. This is the building, in the order you meet it.

The entrance hung with marigold and mango-leaf festoons, a wooden staircase visible through the glass doors.
I The door

Garlanded for the opening and still standing open. The stairs start immediately — the shop goes up, not back.

The ground-floor counter: pale wood and glass cabinets with white busts, cane-backed chairs and pink upholstered seats.
II The counter

Cane chairs and pink seats on your side of the glass. You are meant to sit down at this counter, not lean on it.

The upper floor: a gold chandelier, wooden pillars wound with marigold, a grey sofa on a mezzanine overlooking the shop.
III Upstairs

A chandelier, a balustrade and a long sofa looking down over the floor. This is where the rest of the family waits, and it is the reason a visit here is bearable.

The silver room: rows of silver lamps, kalash and temple mantapas on wooden plinths under lit arched niches.

Lamps, kalash and mantapas in rows under lit arches. Almost nobody photographs this part of a jeweller, which is a pity, because it is the part families come back for every year.

In the cases

Gold, antique work, and a great deal of silver.

Their customers single out the antique pieces and the range, and one puts it more usefully than any advertisement could: “visit once before you hop on to the regular outlets.”

Gold
Bridal sets, haram, chains, kadas, rings and earrings — traditional and contemporary, in 22 KT.
Antique
The temple-work pieces the shop is named for by its customers — Lakshmi motifs, jade and pearl, kundan.
Silver
Lamps, kalash, mantapas, deity figures, elephants and pooja articles. A whole room of it.
Diamond
Rings and earrings, set in yellow and rose gold.

Weights, purity and the day's rate are given at the counter, piece by piece. Nothing is priced on this page because the rate moves daily.

The mark, and the map

The bull on the door is not an ornament.

Paras take a Nandi for their mark, and they stand in Basavanagudi — the quarter of Bengaluru named for the Bull Temple at the top of it. ಬಸವನಗುಡಿ is, literally, the bull's temple.

A hundred years old, and it has ended up on the one street in the city where that mark reads as an address rather than a logo.
